Stay safe online: How To Secure Your Wireless Router

A wireless network is formed by connecting a wireless router to an internet access point(AP), such as a cable or DSL modem. Going wireless allows you to connect several gadgets to the internet from different parts of your house. However, unless you secure your router, others may gain access to information on your computer, use your internet service for free, and maybe use your network to perpetrate cybercrime.

Here are some suggestions for securing your wireless network.

  1. Use of Firewall: Hackers can use your device to send out your personal information without your permission if you have no firewall installed. While antivirus software checks incoming email and data, a firewall acts as a watchdog, monitoring for unauthorized access and restricting communications with sources you don't trust. A firewall is probably pre-installed on your operating system and/or security software, but make sure it's up to date.
  2. Change your router's name: The manufacturer assigns the default ID, which is known as a service set identifier (SSID) or an "extended service set identifier" (ESSID). Change the name of your router to something that is unique to you and that others will not be able to guess.

Tips in Choosing Good Wireless Network Names

  • Don't embed your name, address, birth date, or other personal information as part of the SSID.
  • Don't use any of your Windows or internet website passwords.
  • Don't tempt would-be intruders by using tantalizing network names like MakeMyDay or Top-Secret.
  • Do pick an SSID that contains both letters and numbers.
  • Do choose a name as long or nearly as long as the maximum length allowed.
  • Do consider changing your SSID periodically—at least once every few months.

3. Review your router's security options: Always choose WPA2 or WPA as your router's security level; they are more secure than WEP.
4. Change your router's default password: Hackers will find it much easier to gain access to your network if you leave the default password untouched. It is imperative that you alter it as quickly as possible. A powerful password is defined as a statement with at least 12 characters. Let it be easy to recall and that you enjoy thinking about.
